The UK’s Top Wheelchair Accessible Activities

The Summer is intermittently rearing its head this July, but even without the rays beating down, it’s more than possible to revel in wheelchair accessible escapades across the U.K!

With Chester being labelled the Most Accessible City in Europe in 2017, it is clear that our country is being more receptive to meeting better access requirements. And with such a demand, our towns and cities have been delivering. As such, The Mobility Aids Centre has got together a few of the most memorable adventures and days out where, with a little pre-planning, accessibility is greatly unrestrictive.

The Anderton Boat Lift, Northwich

Awarded the Winner of Large Visitor Attraction of 2018! And who could argue? It owns the handling power to lift barges 50ft from the water with an eternal grace that gained it the nickname Cathedral of the Canals. As such, it is a truly majestic and accessible activity. And following on from Chester’s above feat, it seems that Cheshire has an awful lot to offer! To plan your visit, click here!

Folly Farm, Wales

With a zoo, barn and play park, you’ll be hard pushed not to find a great amount of enjoyment for all the family at Folly Farm. And boasting a special Asian Adventure Exhibit running from July 20th 2019, you’ll have the chance to witness the adorable faces of red pandas, Asian wild dogs and leopard cats up close! For access information, click here!

Monkey World, Dorset

On the topic of animals, Monkey World provides an opportunity to roam around an ape rescue centre! On their website, you will find a page devoted to Disabled Facilities where you will find the best advice for organising your trip. The provided guide shows the most accessible areas of the park, and for the areas that are less so, Monkey World may provide motorised scooters (when booked in advance) to negotiate rougher ground. The Imperial War Museum, Duxford

With a commitment to full access to all visitors, The IWM Duxford presents a fantastic day out for war and aeroplane buffs alike. They hold events across the year, some of the most noteworthy come in the form of Air Show performances where you will watch historic planes in their element as they cruise the skies above. These are every three or four months, so it’s worth checking ahead of time. To find out more about access, click here!

Life Science Centre, Newcastle

Another for all the family to appreciate! The Life Science Centre is an interactive museum where it is encouraged to get involved with the exhibits. From a planetarium to the Experiment Zone, you will come away knowing a few more things than when you first arrived. Though you may use electric wheelchairs, they must be set to manual mode. For those requiring scooters to arrive, manual wheelchairs can be hired for the duration of your visit. For more information, click here!

Abbotsford House, Melrose

For those looking for something more refined, Abbotsford House allows you to journey back in time to experience Sir Walter Scott’s former stomping ground. With awe-striking views of the River Tweed, the estate, and of course the house itself, you will experience something of a literary pilgrimage. There is a minibus service (which is free!) that runs from Edinburg to make visiting easier. To find out more about visiting, click here!

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour; The Making of Harry Potter, London

Appealing to practically everyone, who could forget this activity? The vast majority of the tour is wheelchair accessible, however, there are more difficult areas to navigate (though not impossible). So prepare by getting accustomed to the relevant website page. Likewise, be aware that motorised scooters wider than 86cm are prohibited, but there are free manual wheelchairs to use once you arrive. With so many places evolving their approaches to accessibility, there is so much more for you to enjoy. So you can relax, and keep making beautiful memories with your friends and loved ones in undiscovered places both near and far!

  • Ordered a folding shower seat with 2 grab bars in the morning and these were delivered to me in the afternoon of the same day - that is what I call service. However the following day a further 2 Grab Bars were delivered and the co said that they would collect these the same day - still waiting after 1 week and another call - not so good and still waiting. A point that the co should consider is that we are finding it difficult to get someone to fit the shower seat and they are unable to provide any guidance or help. would suggest that they collect names and telephone numbers of local tradesmen who are trusted to fit their mobility equipment and provide guidance on fitting

  • Fantastic service, I order a Bathmaster Deltis bath chair lift on the 18/08/2015 and using the standard delivery system it was delivered to my house the following day. The chair works very well, it comes packed in the manufactures original box, battery ready charged for instantaneous use and at a very competitive price. Very good performance all round.

  • I was looking for a buggy for adults and the one I purchased named Troy. was excellent, I can put it up & down in seconds. The wheels are superbly easy to turn with. My husband says it is very comfortable and the black leather with red piping is very smart. When folded up there is a padded grip in the middle of the frame, which is perfectly balanced to lift it in and out of cars etc. a wonderfully strong but light wheelchair.
