Who Qualifies for the Motability Scheme?

The Motability Scheme makes it easy to buy and own a mobility product, be it a powered wheelchair or mobility scooter. With three years’ full parts and labour warranty included as standard on all products bought through the scheme – as well as free annual servicing – it’s no wonder why so many people choose to take advantage.

Before you can apply, however, you need to work out whether you’re eligible. This page will help you answer that, and offer next steps to help you apply and take full advantage of all the scheme has to offer.

How to Take Advantage of the Scheme

In order to apply for the Motability Scheme, you must currently receive one of the following benefits.

  • Higher rate mobility part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Higher rate mobility part of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Enhanced rate mobility part of Adult Disability Payment (Scotland)
  • Higher rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment (Scotland)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP

Provided you currently receive one of the benefits listed above (and have at least 12 months remaining on your allowance), you will be able to purchase a scooter or wheelchair through the Motability Scheme no matter your age.

Below, we’ll explain how you can do exactly that.

How does Motability work with PIP?

Before we explain the application process, let’s answer a frequently asked question. As one of Cambridgeshire’s leading Motability specialists, customers often ask us how much of their PIP payment will go towards the Motability scheme.

The enhanced rate mobility component of PIP currently ranges between £15 and £71 per week depending on the scooter or wheelchair you choose. Therefore, if you purchase a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair through Motability, this payment will be used to pay for it (alongside the other benefits that Motability includes, such as free servicing and repairs). Within the three-year contract, this pricing will remain fixed throughout. Please note that you must have at least 12 months’ PIP remaining in order to take advantage of the Motability Scheme.
