5 Great Accessible Places To Visit In The UK

Great Britain has some incredible places to visit with some of the most exquisite views and fresh air, the kind of experience which is not always on your doorstep. So we’ve put together a list of places to visit across the country with disabled access. Just in case the outdoors is somewhere you don’t fancy, then we have also listed places to visit below that are indoor attractions too!

Keeping fit and mobile is obviously a challenge for those of us who have to consistently use equipment to help us move around, but we would always promote any kind of physical activity which naturally improves the body and well-being.

It’s always worth keeping in mind that if some areas are suggestively rural and you use a wheelchair on a daily basis, then choosing the right equipment to enjoy your day, is very important. For example, if you are looking to visit the peak district (or anywhere similar) then you will more than likely need an off-road alternative for your wheelchair or scooter.

#1. Cadbury World – Birmingham

Located in Bournville, to some, the idea of being surrounded by an unlimited supply of chocolate is simply just a dream. Well, this a dream come true with Cadbury World‘s accessibility-focused attractions – we just had to list this as our first indoor attraction to recommend. All the staff are fully trained to help you get the most out of your visit to this chocolate-themed wonderworld!

There are exhibits which have been specifically designed to be sensory experiences and interactive, which means that all ages can have incredible fun. You’ll also find a wheelchair friendly play area so that no-one is left out of the fun and games!

The reception and exhibits are all built to be low-level, which helps you whether you decide to go on your own or with friends and family. Make sure you send us your pictures so we can see just how much fun you got up to.

#2. Clumber Park – Worksop

Clumber Park is a stunning combination of a large walking route, as well as a beautiful courtyard garden, and shops with a great restaurant on site. The walking route stays very close to Clumber Lake at the centre of the park, of which, the route will allow you to see all of the charisma and charm that this location provides. A great opportunity if you like good views and fresh air. We’re sure you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take some stunning pictures of both the views and the amazing food available in the cafe.

There are suggested disabled friendly routes which can be followed and there are also facilities available to hire mobility scooters and push wheelchairs that can help you make your way around the park. The best way to make sure you plan your trip properly is to get in contact with the friendly team at Clumber Park – they will help you get the right information.

#3. The Chill Factorᵉ – Manchester

Just 4 miles from the city centre of Manchester, they’ve had well over 3 million visitors come to slip & slide around one of the UK’s largest real snow ski slopes. Catering for a large majority of ages, there’s something for everyone to do here. With the ski & snowboard lessons ranging from 6 yrs+ to the very popular climbing wall which kids aged 5+ will be able to have endless fun.

For anyone with disabilities, don’t fear; The Chill Factorᵉ has you covered too! With adaptive equipment available as well as specialist instructors giving you required support to cater for all types of mobility. There is plenty of disabled parking available and facilities for you to use and with special non-slip flooring, you can be safe in the knowledge that you are catered for in all aspects. Lifts are located right next to the main reception and paved pathways will help you get around the building.

#4 The Deep – Hull

Fancy swimming with the fishes, but not getting wet? The Deep offers you an incredible experience to understand the importance that sealife plays in the world. The award-winning aquarium gives all families a great day out with sights to see and interactive facilities to enjoy your time. You can watch the trained divers feeding some of the biggest fish you’ve ever seen. You might even want to go and learn about the sea life and how it has evolved over the many millions of years into the fish we see today.

Great for children and adults, the Day Plus Pass admission fee can give you access to The Deep all year round for as many times as you like. If you book online you can save yourself 10% off your tickets, so it is worth booking online. However, the price of the tickets are not that expensive so it really makes little difference, but if cost is something you want to keep down then this really is a great idea. Oh, and children under 3 years old get in free, whether you book online or at the front desk. Carers will also get in free!

The mobility aids supplied at The Deep can help you get around and make sure you don’t miss out on the fun. There are electric scooters, wheelchairs and walking aids. There are purpose-built walkways which are very easy to get around as they are quite wide, this allows you manoeuvrability around the entire attraction.

The team at The Deep are ready to help you plan your visit, just give them a call and start planning the ultimate experience.

#5 The Science Museum – London

For those budding science enthusiasts, there is a massive exhibition that allows you to see science at work right before your eyes. Located in South Kensington, and with very close tube stations nearby, the ability to get to The Science Museum is quick & easy.

There are well-trained staff on site who can help you navigate your way around the museum and they cater for all abilities, including deaf and blind persons. You can borrow a wheelchair or bring your own as the exhibits are very easy to access. There are also plenty of lifts which can help you move to each floor and get the very best out of your visit.

The best thing about The Science Museum is that it is free to enter and open 7 days a week 10am to 6pm! Some events and activities might require additional tickets, so it is worth checking beforehand. There is also a gift shop just in case you wanted to take away a souvenir to remember your trip.

We hope our guide to some of the best attractions in the UK has helped you decide on a special place to take your loved ones, with the piece of mind that each provides easy access and facilities for your individual needs.

  • Ordered a folding shower seat with 2 grab bars in the morning and these were delivered to me in the afternoon of the same day - that is what I call service. However the following day a further 2 Grab Bars were delivered and the co said that they would collect these the same day - still waiting after 1 week and another call - not so good and still waiting. A point that the co should consider is that we are finding it difficult to get someone to fit the shower seat and they are unable to provide any guidance or help. would suggest that they collect names and telephone numbers of local tradesmen who are trusted to fit their mobility equipment and provide guidance on fitting

  • Fantastic service, I order a Bathmaster Deltis bath chair lift on the 18/08/2015 and using the standard delivery system it was delivered to my house the following day. The chair works very well, it comes packed in the manufactures original box, battery ready charged for instantaneous use and at a very competitive price. Very good performance all round.

  • I was looking for a buggy for adults and the one I purchased named Troy. was excellent, I can put it up & down in seconds. The wheels are superbly easy to turn with. My husband says it is very comfortable and the black leather with red piping is very smart. When folded up there is a padded grip in the middle of the frame, which is perfectly balanced to lift it in and out of cars etc. a wonderfully strong but light wheelchair.
