A Guide To Getting Your Mobility Scooter Ready For Summer

We are now in the summer season where the days are long and the nights are warm. With the sun showing its regular presence, now is the perfect time to get out on the mobility scooter!

However, throughout the colder months, it’s common for mobility scooters to be stored away in the garage for long periods of time. This calls for a careful examination of the scooter and preparing it adequately, in order to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.

The Mobility Aids Centre has put together a guide with the most important areas to check before heading out for a summer cruise!

Yoo-Hoo, Big Summer Cleanout

Assuming that your mobility scooter has been hibernating in the garage, shed or storage unit over the winter months, it is expected that it will have collected a coat of dust, dirt and grime. Therefore, a thorough clean of the mobility scooter is needed.

This clean is not just to make the scooter look better, it is extremely important to remove all dirt in order to prevent corrosion on any metal parts. On top of this, it is also possible for dirt to settle within the mechanisms of the scooter and jam the movement.

Keep a Sturdy Ride

If you have left your mobility scooter in a space that has the tendency to vary in temperature, this can cause contraction or expansion of parts. This means parts of your mobility scooter may become loose, whether it is a screw or parts in the electric engine, it may cause rattling or movement in places there shouldn’t be.

While testing your mobility scooter before taking it out for a ride, if you find or hear any loose parts, we would highly recommend tightening them. However, if you do not feel confident to fix these parts yourself, you should check the warranty coverage of the scooter. At The Mobility Aids Centre, we offer in-house mobility equipment servicing and repairs, to find out more click here!

Stay On The Move With Reliable Batteries

It is imperative to ensure that the batteries in your mobility scooter are reliable and long-lasting. Therefore, a visual check needs to be undertaken. If you can see any liquid or residue such as battery acid, we would not recommend charging the batteries until it has been accessed by a professional.

If you’re sure that the battery looks healthy from a visual point of view, the next step will be to charge the scooter in order to check that the temperature that the mobility scooter was stored in has not affected the life of the battery.

Tyres and Brakes Inspection

It is essential to have tyres and brakes on your mobility scooter that work correctly. This is very important for your safety and the safety of others around you. It is important to check the tyre pressure on a monthly basis to ensure the correct level. This can be done at home or at a tyre pressure machine (typically found at petrol stations).

To inspect the brakes, we would recommend finding a quiet, open and flat area to drive the scooter. Next, get the scooter up to a good speed and test the brakes. This assures you that there are no mechanical faults or visible obstructions that could catch you off guard in a more serious circumstance.

  • Ordered a folding shower seat with 2 grab bars in the morning and these were delivered to me in the afternoon of the same day - that is what I call service. However the following day a further 2 Grab Bars were delivered and the co said that they would collect these the same day - still waiting after 1 week and another call - not so good and still waiting. A point that the co should consider is that we are finding it difficult to get someone to fit the shower seat and they are unable to provide any guidance or help. would suggest that they collect names and telephone numbers of local tradesmen who are trusted to fit their mobility equipment and provide guidance on fitting

  • I was looking for a buggy for adults and the one I purchased named Troy. was excellent, I can put it up & down in seconds. The wheels are superbly easy to turn with. My husband says it is very comfortable and the black leather with red piping is very smart. When folded up there is a padded grip in the middle of the frame, which is perfectly balanced to lift it in and out of cars etc. a wonderfully strong but light wheelchair.
