Dynamic Parapodium

The Dynamic Parapodium goes from strength to strength!

First Mile WalkIn October 2004 we had the ‘world’s first one mile walk’ where I used the Dynamic Parapodium to cover the distance in 3 hours and seven minutes. The day was a tremendous success and was to prove that such a distance could be achieved by a mid thoracic paraplegic as well as raising over £6000 for organisations who support spinal injury. The challenge for 2005 was for a team of six disabled Parapodium users completing a 24hr relay walk, the event pushed the boundaries of disability achievements and raised the sum of £10,000 for the eleven spinal units in the UK.

The Dynamic ParapodiumSo what actually is it?
The Dynamic Parapodium is an Active standing frame, technically speaking a Reciprocating Walking Orthoses. There are five different size frames for children through to adults, there is even a mobile frame where you are supported in a standing position and use your own legs.

How does it work?
The user is able to walk by rocking the device from side to side. Once one leg is off the ground, hand levers allow the leg to swing forward as in placing a step. The opposite leg can now be placed in front of the first step allowing the users to walk in the desired direction.

Paralised WalkerWho can use it?
From experience we have found that the Parapodium has benefited many individuals with varying disability such as : Cerebral Palsy, Muscular dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, Spina Bifida, Neurological, Spinally Injured (Paraplegia and Tetraplegia) to name a few.
